Reasoning engine

Relevant signals and recommendations

Clinical Rules are applied to the patient data using a reasoning engine that was specially designed for this purpose. The engine can be queried both stand-alone and in server mode. It uses the medication data, clinical-chemical parameters and Clinical Rules to deduce relevant warning signals and advice.

Only those signals that are relevant are presented to the user. For example:

In the case of a prescription for metformine to a patient  with a creatinine clearance of 96.8 ml/min/1.73m2 –a normal value that does not imply kidney failure– no warning signal appears. For the same medication, but with a creatinine clearance of 48.3 ml/min/1.73m2, the engine presents a warning signal: reduce metformine start dosage to 500 mg, twice daily.

A patient’s medication data and the laboratory results for creatinine and potassium are retrieved from the appropriate systems and used for reasoning. The engine sends the conclusions and advice back to the platform, which presents them to the user.

Adherence to existing guidelines

Pharmaps Medication Safety PLUS automates medication safety advice specifically relating to renal failure, as described in the G-Standard and your own Clinical Rules. In this way, the application implements large parts of the recommendations from the concept HARM-wrestling report.
